Story 8/39: Inter-dimensional Alliance

Chloe paced around the room, her heartbeat increasing, her palms becoming sweaty by the minute, and her mind was blasting through several thoughts. Liam looked at her with the ring in his hand and uncertainty looming over his head as his knee started to pound. It had been over ten minutes since he had asked the most important question of his life and Chloe had responded with an ‘eek’ sound with a non-decipherable walk that had continued and positively sped up with each passing minute – not a good sign.

“Bae! Can you answer? Either answer would work. I just want to get up now,” he said half-jokingly.

Chloe and Liam had met three years ago and a party where Chloe was drinking and dancing and Liam was grouching and complaining. Liam had come out of a rough breakup and had decided that he was done with women. And then he met Chloe. She was like the sun – bright, energizing, and alive. She inspired him to become a better person and helped him grow into the person he wanted to become.

Looking back, Liam believes that if he had not met Chloe, his vow might have lasted a long time. Fortunately, the wild and outgoing Chloe bumped into Liam and their lives changed forever. Now, Liam wanted to make those three years into a lifetime and now, all he wanted was a ‘yes’ from her to do that.

Chloe looked at him with a half-smile that was even more disheartening for Liam. He knew it was a ‘No’ and now, he just wanted to get over it.

“Bae,” Chloe started, “I love you and I really like you.”

“But…”

Chloe chewed her lip. She had never said this to anyone and she didn’t know how to say it to Liam, or even if she should say it to Liam.

“But I’m not who you think I am,” she said.

“Meaning?”

Chloe closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“I’m not a human. I’m actually a phoenix who is living under the guise of a human being to understand humans better,” she blurted out without opening her eyes.

“You can just say no. You don’t have to lie so poorly.” Liam said and got up.

Chloe opened her eyes and took Liam’s hand. She looked at his face and traced her hand through the contour of his cheek. “Damn it.” She said, more to herself and stood up.

“See for yourself,” Chloe said and turned into a giant phoenix. She was huge, about the size of a horse with wings spanning across the room. Her legs turned into talons and her hands replaced with wings. Her feathers were white in color with a brilliance of red flowing through them and they shone in the room’s light with enough dazzle that she looked like a giant crystal in the middle of the room.

Liam was dazed. He kept looking from top to bottom, from one tip of her wing to another tip of her wing.

“I know! I’m hideous.” Chloe said and her wings closed and covered her body. Liam could hear low rumbling which he had come to know as her crying.

He gently touched her wing and opened it. They felt like talc and marble had bonded with each other – soft to touch and hard to move.

“You’re joking, right. You’re the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen.”

“You should see the other phoenixes. Bright red and golden in color, flaunting their wings all around. I’m just white,” Chloe said as Liam wiped her tears.

“You’ll still be the most beautiful creature to me and the most important one too,” Liam said. Chloe looked at her with joy and turned back to her human form.

“How do you do that?” Liam asked.

“I’ve some limited magic, not as much as others but it allows me to shape-shift in the human form.”

“So, all phoenix can turn into humans? Are there more of your kind here?”

“It’s a bit complicated. I’m from a different dimension where there are a lot of different kinds of creatures – phoenix, dragons among others. All phoenixes can shape-shift. We come to Earth for vacations and then go back.”

“Go back?”

“Yeah! My original trip was supposed to be six months but then I met you.”

Liam smiled.

“And now?”

“Now, you go back to your knee,” Chloe said and smiled.

Liam got down to one knee and asked again.

“Chloe. Will you marry me?”

“My real name is not Chloe. It’s Yining.”

“Of course!” Liam said and grinned.

“Yining. Will you marry me?”

“Yes,’ Yining said and kissed Liam.
